The developer denies it, but fans argue that something very strange is happening with the way weapons are generated in Destiny 2

Despite Bungie’s relatively good streak in trying to satisfy the Destiny 2 audience—absorbing staff from PlayStation doesn’t help, though—a new controversy has erupted this week that has shaken the community: evidence has been found pointing to the possibility that the probability of obtaining certain weapon skill combinations may be conditioned, despite the American studio insisting for some time that this is not the case.

In context, the vast majority of weapons in Destiny 2 are generated with a semi-random combination of perks, as is the case in almost all MMOs. The system is designed in such a way that Bungie chooses certain potential perks for the magazine column, as well as for the sight column, and so on. But the idea is that you should be able to get any of the possible traits from each group. Is this really the case? Yes, but there are reasons to believe that certain combinations of perks are more likely to be obtained than others.

According to research by player T1Vendetta on Twitter, who is part of one of the most successful clans in the game, the physical organization of weapon perks in Bungie’s API can define the probability of obtaining them. This means that in the two columns that store perks with special effects, it is very easy to obtain (for example) the two that occupy the third position; while combining the one in the third position with the one in the fourth position is a bit more difficult, and if you want the first from one column with the last from the other, the chances are minimal.

This is important because Destiny 2 enthusiasts spend a lot of time studying and obtaining the most effective skill combinations for tasks such as cycling damage in a short time window or activating certain unique effects of their class, among many other things.

Fans Disagree with Bungie

Why bring up this issue specifically now, and how true is it? The first is easier to answer than the second. Doubts arise with the release of Episode 2 Revenant, which brought with it a grenade launcher called Chill Inhibitor EV with a possibly incredibly powerful perk combination: “envious arsenal” + “bait and switch.” Considering its usefulness in raids and dungeons, especially with the mods included in the latest seasonal artifact, everyone should normaly have it. But Light.gg reveals that this combination only exists in 6.62% of the rolls that have not been discarded, a very low figure.

Bungie has responded to these suspicions on several occasions stating that the probability of obtaining one perk or another is completely random, and that there are no rarer ones than others. But at this moment, many believe that the combination of one perk with another may indeed be affected by a bug or something similar. It is expected that new data will come with the weekly report. Until then, we will have to draw our own conclusions by examining the most popular perk combinations.
