Not every day is announced on Steam the end of a 15-year development, but that’s what happened this week with Caves of Qud. This fantasy and science fiction roguelike will release its version 1.0 on December 5th on Valve’s platform after receiving support from PC players for over a decade in early access with 95% positive reviews.
Described as an epic project, Caves of Qud started in 2007 as the dream of two developers (Jason Grinblat and Brian Bucklew). Over time, collaborators joined the cause to turn it, as stated on Steam, into a wild garden of emergent narrative where a hand-written story guides us through rich physical, social, and historical simulations. “The result is a hybrid world that is both handmade and procedurally generated and is alive in a way that few game worlds are,” they add.
You can do anything in Caves of Qud
In Caves of Qud, you can do anything, even clone yourself, mentally control the clone, and force it to kill itself, being a turn-based combat sandbox, with a lot of exploration and unpredictable gameplay in which we will travel through a strange, labyrinthine, and uniquely deeply simulated fantasy and science fiction world, including its NPCs, as complex as ourselves.
Caves of Qud can be played as a classic permadeath roguelike, as a classic character development RPG, or as an exploration game where you don’t worry so much about hostile creatures and simply travel through its world. It also includes a fourth gameplay mode for daily matches. Remember, it will be available on PC via Steam and GOG on December 5th.
It will include the end of the game’s main mission, a completely graphical user interface, hundreds of visual and sound effect improvements, as well as the obvious optimization that every player expects with a 1.0 version. However, if you don’t want to wait for its release, you can purchase the game now on Steam for 14.27 euros, taking advantage of a temporary 15% discount.
