Next week will mark the one-year anniversary of the release of Alan Wake 2, the comeback of Remedy’s frustrated writer who had been waiting for a new game of his own for over 10 years. For many, this survival horror game was the standout game of 2023, but it faced all sorts of problems that have been gradually resolved over time. Now, with the release of its latest DLC and the arrival of its physical version, the game has been updated for free to improve its performance, and Xbox Series S has come out on top: while the older siblings of the generation have received stability adjustments, Microsoft’s little one has unexpectedly improved its resolution.

Aside from the gyroscope feature of the PS5 and PC version, with DualSense controller support, and the version for PS5 Pro that enhances resolution and visual quality, as well as adding support for PSSR, Alan Wake 2 hasn’t forgotten about the Microsoft ecosystem. In this case, both Xbox Series have received support for VRR (Variable Refresh Rate), but while the Series X has seen few improvements, the more affordable Xbox model has improved significantly.

One of the most prominent improvements for Xbox Series S users is the increase in the game’s internal resolution. Before the update, Alan Wake 2 ran at a resolution of 1280×720, but with this patch, it has increased to 1505×847. Although the game still uses scaling techniques to enhance the final resolution, starting from a higher base significantly improves the visual quality on Microsoft’s most accessible console.

While not a noticeable and exaggerated increase, it is an improvement in resolution that we have recently seen in games like Dragon’s Dogma 2. Many studios are taking the opportunity to refine, albeit somewhat late, their releases with improvements in console versions, ultimately increasing the resolution. Even Alan Wake 2 reduced its technical requirements on PC months after its release, after certain adjustments by the Finnish studio, which seems to be a trend, although not as widespread as one might expect.

Alan Wake 2’s Lake House is now available

While the rest of the additions in the game’s Anniversary Update revolve around certain quality of life adjustments or the inclusion of a “God Mode” to make progressing through the game easier and worry-free about running out of bullets or batteries, the main highlight is The Lake House. This second and final update promises to take horror to a new level, just in time for Halloween. Remedy has stated that this additional content is their best work in the survival horror genre, and best of all, it connects directly with Control 2, Remedy’s next big game.
