The Disney live-action nobody asked for: The Charming Prince will have its own story and maybe it’s not the best way to do it.

I don’t like to judge movies I haven’t seen beforehand. Even those that I struggle with due to their own structure deserve at least one viewing before I pass judgment. Therefore, I will not be the one to question the quality of this work that will be directed by Paul King, director of the recent Wonka, without giving it a chance. However, I have previously discussed Disney’s direction with live-action films and that is where I can foresee an irregular future. The amount of projects that are announced (and increasing) has made the public lose track of which company films are confirmed, which are rumors, or which are just wishful thinking. Hercules, Snow White, Lilo & Stitch, Atlantis, The Aristocats… the list is considerable. Hence, the announcement of a Prince Charming movie seems, at the very least, untimely.

The Prince Charming Movie

To understand this point of view, it is necessary to know the trajectory of Disney’s live-action films to date. The success began in 2010 with the release of Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. In 2014, Maleficent arrived to tell a new version of the classic Sleeping Beauty. Despite being one of the most valued adaptations over time, changes in the main story made many people disagree with the new version of the villain. From then on, Disney decided to create faithful adaptations to the original works.

Later came Cinderella, The Jungle Book, Alice Through the Looking Glass, Beauty and the Beast, Christopher Robin, Dumbo, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid… The vast majority of these releases failed to succeed with an audience that was increasingly tired. Among the reasons for discontent, we find changes in the aesthetic of characters, debates around certain aspects, character removal, lack of essence… Over time, talking about a Disney live-action film has become synonymous with controversy rather than excitement. The latest example can be seen following the trailer for Snow White.

Given this scenario and the fact that the great classic stories fail to succeed in their live-action versions as expected, what can we expect from an adaptation of a character we have barely seen in their own movie? It is clear that Disney is looking to develop an original story for this character, as was the case with the series Once Upon a Time, but the medium (or the timing) does not seem appropriate, not to mention that Cinderella already has a prince in the 2015 live-action version.

However, referring back to the beginning of the text, we will have to wait for its future release to see if Disney manages to surprise with something innovative or falls into the same tone they have accustomed us to. One thing is clear, and that is that the path to follow must be more similar to Cruella, with a new story, rather than copies of the original works that fail to resonate with the audience.
