A new wave of Gmail-related scams impacts a third of the global population due to AI

Published:

In recent weeks, Google has further strengthened its commitment to preventing scams and mass fraud. Therefore, the company has launched several tools for its Android operating system and also for other applications like Gmail, the world’s most popular messaging service. However, 33% of the world’s population is threatened by a new massive Gmail scam that unfortunately has caused many victims to fall into its trap.

Amazon, Google and Microsoft no longer trust renewable energy, but the benefits of abandoned nuclear power plants

As indicated by the portal JeuxVideo in a recent publication, this new scam targeting Gmail users uses artificial intelligence and is affecting a third of the world’s population. The scam starts with a fake password recovery email that looks legitimate. If the victim does not respond to this email, they receive a phone call from a supposed Google support service. Unfortunately, the call includes an automated recording that imitates Google’s voice, which is why alerts about suspicious account-related activity manage to fool the victims.

A highly sophisticated scam

The scammer, according to the original news, presents themselves as a Google support agent. They use a convincing accent and tone, using artificial intelligence to simulate human interaction. Unfortunately, this scam is extremely sophisticated, as it uses AI to speak in multiple languages and simulate real conversations with background noise from a call center. Since AI can imitate any accent and language, scammers take advantage to deceive their victims.

To protect yourself from this fraud, it is essential to enable two-factor authentication on Google accounts, a process that requires an additional code to access the account. Additionally, it is important to note that Google never directly calls its users. Therefore, any call claiming to be from the company is likely false. So, if you receive an email or a call indicating suspicious activity related to your account, consider it likely a scam.
