The war is on. At the beginning of August, we learned that the arrival of PCs with ARM had the intention not only of lowering the cost of computers, but also of bringing a generational change with them. Therefore, companies like Intel or AMD had their knives out, as a hypothetical escalation of ARM chips would go against their interests. And, for this reason, they have announced an alliance with other big tech companies to preserve the presence of the x86 architecture.
As stated by the portal The Verge in a recent publication, the new x86 advisory group is made up of MAD, Intel, and other tech giants like Microsoft, Google, and Meta. In fact, the alliance also includes Lenovo, a company that became the host of the announcement by sharing it during its Tech World 2024 conference. Thus, the goal is to improve compatibility, predictability, and consistency among products based on the x86 architecture, but that will not be their only task.
Seeking standardization in AMD and Intel products
In addition to what has already been mentioned, these companies intend to standardize interfaces in the product lines of AMD and Intel through simplified architectural guidelines. In this way, the creation of the group seems to be a direct response to the growth of ARM, as its architecture is beginning to challenge the dominance of x86. In fact, companies like Apple have already completed their transition from Intel to ARM chips through their own silicon architecture, which represents a strong boost for ARM.
Thus, much of this growth is related to the significant advances that Qualcomm has made with its ARM chips in Windows devices after years of failed attempts. In this way, ARM chips are on the rise and companies like the two mentioned are just an example of the adoption of this architecture. And, therefore, companies like Intel and AMD are not only feeling this pressure, but they are already showing concern about how ARM continues to gain ground in the integrated chip market.
