Amazon follows the steps of Google and Microsoft, also betting a large part of its future on nuclear energy performance.

The future of artificial intelligence, cloud data management, and other technology sectors that require a lot of energy are pointing towards nuclear power plants. Microsoft, one of the most valuable companies in the world, is already negotiating the reopening of a nuclear plant in the United States to meet the demand for its technology. And, according to several American sources, it is not the only company looking to carry out this maneuver.

As Ars Technica indicates in a recent publication, Amazon has announced three new agreements to develop small modular nuclear reactors, a move that follows in the footsteps of Google in its transition to carbon-free energy. These reactors are smaller than traditional nuclear plants, making them a more efficient option for technology companies aiming to meet their climate goals. Amazon has announced three agreements that will take effect in the next decade.

They could generate up to 960 MW

However, the agreement Amazon has signed includes a clause that would allow them to expand capacity to 12 modules, a situation that could generate up to 960 MW. In other words, this energy is capable of providing power to 770,000 homes in the United States, a figure that demonstrates the potential of this initiative. Amazon and its new partner X-energy plan to develop over 5,000 MW of SMR projects by the year 2039, making it the largest commercial implementation of these reactors to date.

For large technology companies, nuclear energy is very attractive. Unlike renewables such as solar or wind, nuclear power can generate electricity without depending on the weather or time of day. However, these projects are still subject to regulatory approval and are linked to various economic challenges. Therefore, despite its potential, it still faces some opposition due to environmental and health concerns, especially regarding uranium mining and the storage of radioactive waste.
