A Xiaomi patent aims to solve the main problem of smart rings

Published:

One of Samsung’s most successful devices in recent months has been the Galaxy Ring, the smart ring from the South Korean company. After selling out, it sparked the interest of other companies that saw the potential of this device. However, despite its growing popularity and the attention it is attracting from many users, there is an issue they cannot overlook: ring sizes.

As indicated by Android Authority in a recent publication, smart rings face the challenge of sizes, a situation that forces companies to offer multiple sizes to ensure the sensors work properly. In fact, if they do not fit the skin correctly, they cannot efficiently measure metrics, leading to altered data on heart rate, sleep, and blood oxygen levels. And apparently, this situation is about to come to an end thanks to a patent from Xiaomi.

Xiaomi’s Focus on Self-Adjusting Design

According to the original news, the intention of the Asian company is to develop a smart ring with a design that automatically adjusts to the finger. This will make use of an elastic component and a spring mechanism for it. Therefore, it will offer the opportunity to use it on different fingers, share it with others, and adapt to changes like swelling or weight fluctuations. Additionally, the same patent mentions that the ring will include features like Wi-Fi connectivity, 5G, NFC, and health tracking sensors, as well as a touch panel, microphone, and speaker.

However, it seems that Xiaomi is not the only one considering this idea. Oura, a company with several years of experience in this field, is also exploring a self-adjusting design but will opt for a mechanism similar to headphone bands. This option could solve the size selection issues, as neither Oura nor Samsung currently offer a similar concept. Nevertheless, there are no guarantees that this technology will hit the market, but all signs point to it being a matter of time given the interest in smart rings.
