It’s hard to imagine how The Boys would have turned out without such a charismatic actor like Antony Starr playing Homelander. Over the course of four seasons, we’ve seen more than enough evidence of his immense acting talent, but like many other current industry stars, the beloved villain of the small screen started out in small roles and commercials.
As we have previously reported on 3DJuegos, three decades ago he was recruited for two episodic characters on Xena: Warrior Princess. He played a young and injured centaur in one episode, and David against Goliath in another. But during the same months, he was also promoting the benefits of a New Zealand film and video game rental service that we have recently discovered thanks to Santiago Bustamante. The commercial is definitely worth watching.
Playing Mortal Kombat and Twisted Metal
With long hair and dressed in a denim jacket, Starr portrayed a passionate (perhaps too much) PlayStation player ready to mash the buttons of the original PlayStation controller in games like Mortal Kombat 3 or Twisted Metal, which has just been adapted into a television series by AXN.
As explained by MEMEY_IFUNNY in a Reddit post, the company that Antony Starr advertised was one of the leading DVD sales and rental companies for nearly 40 years in New Zealand, a kind of Blockbuster of the Pacific Ocean country. Currently, there are only two stores left open.
Going back to Antony Starr, the actor started to receive more work at the beginning of the new century, but it wasn’t until 2013 when Cinemax (HBO) cast him in Banshee, an excellent crime thriller series that began to gain worldwide recognition. He then got his opportunity as Homelander in The Boys on Prime Video.
After watching this commercial, at least for me, two things became clear. First, that he had everything from a young age to portray Homelander; and second, that Antony Starr could have been a great youtuber for reaction videos.
On 3DJuegos | Tom Cruise worked for free in a movie to prove the director wrong. Jerry Maguire was a success.
On 3DJuegos | PlayStation surprises and announces the release date of Spider-Man 2 on PC. We only have to wait until early 2025.
