Gaming on Linux for M1-based systems is now a reality

Alyssa Rosenzweig, a well-known developer, announced that gaming on Linux is now a reality for M1-based systems. Since Windows games are x86 binaries that use Direct X APIs, Asahi seeks to make these work on Arm Linux using Vulkan, an aspect linked to emulation. It was also confirmed that the most demanding titles require at least 16 GB of system memory to function properly.

Thus, to take advantage of its gaming aspect, they need the Fex emulator, the Wine tool to translate Windows APIs to Linux, and the combination of DXVK + vk3d3-proton to convert DirectX calls to Vulkan. Therefore, each Windows title is virtualized through a compact virtual machine, allowing for smooth operation of both hardware and games. And, although achieving 60 fps in recent AAA titles is still an impossible task, this announcement already represents a historic feat for Linux.
