After playing Piccolo in the infamous live-action Dragon Ball movie, he provided the English voice for a villain of Goku in the Super anime as a way of apologizing to the fans.

A few days ago, we highlighted the importance of Dragon Ball: Evolution in convincing Akira Toriyama to return to the manga-anime world over a decade ago. The writer and artist was so horrified after watching the movie that he couldn’t leave the saga in someone else’s hands again. But that wasn’t the only good thing to come out of that Hollywood debacle. James Marsters, the actor who portrayed Piccolo, would later lend his voice to another one of Goku’s villains in English.

“This is an apology for that movie”

It was, in a way, his attempt to apologize to manga-anime fans. This is what he explained in an interview with Michael Rosenbaum, which we can read on ComicBook. In his conversation with the former Lex Luthor in Smallville, Marsters talks about how he experienced the disastrous release of Dragon Ball: Evolution and how, years later, he was able to reconnect with the saga by voicing (in English) Zamasu, a major antagonist in the ‘Future’ Trunks arc of Dragon Ball: Super, even though he doesn’t appear with his real name in the credits.

As “David Gray,” he also provides the voice for Zamasu in Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO.

“I realized in a fairly slow and painful way that I was witnessing something truly horrible. But the thing is, I was tired of hearing criticism for it, so as soon as I had the opportunity to participate in Super, I thought, ‘Oh, it’s okay, let’s do this little trick of using a false name, so I can go to fan conventions and tell everyone that I am Zamusa and this is an apology for that movie. (…) The only good thing about that movie is that not many people saw it. And if you’re thinking of watching it, you better not.”

His portrayal of Zamasu certainly received more praise than his washed-out Piccolo from the live-action Dragon Ball: Evolution. Let’s remember that Justin Chatwin, who played Goku in that movie, also wanted to apologize to Akira Toriyama after his passing: “I’m very sorry for what we did.” Meanwhile, fans can enjoy a new episode of Dragon Ball Daima today, or they can also play Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO.
