There are many things that can be said about Amazon Games’ management, but it is clear that they do not abandon their projects. Although New World faltered in number of players after a tremendous debut in 2021, the Americans rallied together and decided to launch Aeternum, an updated version of the MMO with gameplay improvements and console compatibility. However, even though the release was two days ago, the atmosphere in the game has been tarnished by the hostility of some members of the community towards new players on PS5 and Xbox Series.
As mentioned yesterday, the arrival of Aeternum has brought a breath of fresh air for New World, which Amazon hopes will be sustained over time. With a peak of 51,346 players in the last few hours on Steam, the MMO seems to have come back to life after a year where it could barely surpass 10,000 concurrent users day by day. However, adapting to consoles involves certain mechanical adjustments that seem to be the origin of this conflict.
The arrival of console players has generated criticism towards the recent user interface updates and other settings, which some veteran PC players find unsatisfactory. This perception has led to growing frustration among players of this platform, who feel that Amazon Games is focusing more on consoles to maximize their revenue, neglecting the older community. This situation has motivated some PC players to harass newcomers in the game chat.
Various players have expressed their dissatisfaction on platforms like Reddit, pointing out the hate and mockery that console users suffer, calling these PC players “the PC elite“, in relation to the classic master race concept. A user, MikeBizzleVT, mentioned that “90% of global chat is full of negative comments towards consoles”. Other players have reported harassment towards those enjoying New World on PlayStation and Xbox, and many have chosen to disable the chat to avoid the toxic environment.
New World players prefer to deactivate cross-play
In fact, according to our colleagues at MeinMMO, there has been a call from console players to avoid playing on servers with PC users. For those console players who prefer to avoid cross-play and negative behavior, there is the option to play on exclusive servers. The Mardi servers (PlayStation only) and Iroko servers (Xbox only) are available, although cross-play must be disabled in the game settings beforehand. As the New World community continues to grow, the hope is to foster a more positive environment for all players, regardless of the platform.
Despite the controversy, the overall state of New World is positive, with many players enjoying the new version of Aeternum. Cross-play servers have facilitated interaction between players from different platforms, creating a sense of community within the game. However, the contentious atmosphere in global chat has been disheartening for newcomers.
