Finally, after much anticipation, Metaphor: ReFantazio is released today. It is a significant debut for several reasons. Firstly, it is the first game from Studio Zero, a team within Atlus formed by the main creative force behind the Persona series. Secondly, it is one of the most anticipated RPGs of the year, and after receiving outstanding reviews from the press, the hype was off the charts. Now, we know that this expectation was not unfounded, as it is the second most played game from Atlus on Steam and a success with an outstanding rating on the same platform.
Initially announced as Project Re-Fantasy in 2017, after the formation of the studio a year earlier by the legendary Katsura Hashino, director of Persona 3 and Persona 5, among others, the project has evolved to leave behind its basic inspiration and expand towards a medieval RPG concept that promises a minimum of 100 hours of content. Last week, when the review embargo was lifted, it already had a 93 out of 100 rating on Metacritic, becoming the third highest-rated project of 2024 after Shadow of the Erdtree and Astro Bot.
However, Atlus still needed to convince players who were skeptical after a PC demo with certain performance problems. Nevertheless, Metaphor: ReFantazio opened its doors at 6:00 AM (Spanish Peninsula time) on Steam, and within just an hour, it surpassed Persona 5 Royal, the second most played game from Atlus on PC, with 38,188 players. The best part is that this new RPG seems determined to exceed Persona 3 Reload, the game with the highest concurrent users from the company, with 45,002 players.
The reviews on the platform have also been impressive. With just 140 reviews, which is understandable considering it’s only been available for three hours, Metaphor: ReFantazio has obtained a 90% positive rating on Valve’s platform. In addition, the ratings on the PlayStation Store are close to five stars, and on Xbox, it is also nearing a perfect rating. A successful debut, no doubt.
Metaphor: ReFantazio has already sold one million copies
The positive player data is not the only thing putting smiles on the faces of Atlus and SEGA. According to Studio Zero, Metaphor: ReFantazio has sold over one million copies between PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC. It is a resounding success that is expected to continue growing as we approach the weekend.
