If there is one studio that has been on everyone’s lips in recent months, it’s Bungie. The studio behind Halo and Destiny, purchased by Sony in 2022, has faced complaints and doubts about its business model and survival in the market, especially as PlayStation’s games as a service have barely performed. The Americans have in their hands Marathon, a game that has generated doubts across the internet, but that doesn’t seem to have dampened Bungie’s enthusiasm; in fact, the studio is said to have accelerated the project and has already begun a first external test of the game.
The YouTube content creator HiddenXperia, known for his content on Halo, revealed in a tweet that he has been playing Marathon at Bungie’s facilities, describing his experience as “surreal”, hopefully in a good way. However, and as expected with a project of such magnitude for Bungie and under the scrutiny of many, he could not provide details about the game, leaving the community with more questions than answers about the mechanics and gameplay.
Nevertheless, this mention has raised expectations among fans of the Washingtonian studio, who have been eagerly awaiting to see how the game has developed since its announcement in May 2023 during the PlayStation Showcase. As we mentioned, throughout its development, Marathon has been criticized for being “too ambitious“, leading to layoffs at Bungie and the creation of a new studio within the company. Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier mentioned that the game’s progress was not meeting expectations and had been delayed by a whole year, raising concerns about its release.
However, while external tests may indicate that the game has received a boost, the community may have to wait longer to get substantial information about Marathon. Bungie has decided not to rush, and Bungie’s CEO, Scott Taylor, has already warned players that the studio would take a downtime to focus on the game’s development and internal testing, something that seems to be strictly followed.
Marathon will be a hero-based games as a service
As Bungie continues to develop Marathon, a games as a service with “extraction shooter” mechanics, information about the project came to light last September, one that is expected to have an initial price of $40, similar to Helldivers 2, with a monetization model that will include a cosmetic store and a battle pass.
