Even though it was released two years ago, players are still discovering some of the most interesting secrets of Elden Ring. Somehow we have to pass the time while we wait for the expansion, and it’s no secret that among fans of FromSoftware games, there are many players who won’t stop until they solve any mystery. In this case, let’s look back to 2023, just 16 months after the RPG was released, when a player was able to find a deleted sword from the final version of the game that had been hidden from us since the day of release. As you can imagine, there are plenty of elements deleted from the video game, but there are several reasons why this one is truly interesting.
The most mysterious sword of Elden Ring
Ziostorm, a content creator specializing in ‘soulslike’ games in general and Hidetaka Miyazaki‘s games in particular, popularized the story in October 2023. He explained that, among all the objects discovered through ‘datamining’ that were not used in the final version of Elden Ring, there were three particularly striking ones. He referred to a set of swords that seemed related to each other: they all had the same handle design and identical length. This caught the attention of another user – also a content creator – who was willing to get to the bottom of it.
This community member (PinoPinisimo) discovered that, although the three swords had been deleted in the sense that they couldn’t be used, they were present in the video game. They are specifically found as a funerary decoration that appears throughout the Lands Between. “After watching your video, those swords stayed stuck in my head for weeks. You can imagine how I jumped out of my chair when I realized,” he explained through his Twitter account.
The secret, hidden in plain sight, was not easy to uncover. We have to consider that it’s difficult to notice with such detail the handles of swords with only a decorative function, but also that it wasn’t enough to confirm the theory. Players had to go one step further, checking the tips of the swords (which are hidden beneath the ground) to dispel any doubts. In that sense, deciphering the mystery was even more difficult than it seemed. Perhaps that’s why we had to wait three months since these deleted swords became popular and over 18 months since the game was released.
After the discovery, new questions arise that only Hidetaka Miyazaki and the Elden Ring development team can answer. However, fans have not been slow to create their own theories. Among them is the theory of Ziostorm himself, who popularized the story of these swords: “There probably was a mission involved in shaping this sword [the one that seems to be blunt] in one of the other two versions.” The truth is that it would have been an interesting idea, and we can only hope to see something similar in the already announced expansion.
