The truth is that 2023 was not a bad year at all. While this year we are at the climax of developments that started shortly before the pandemic, which stopped everything in 2020, with big games scheduled to be released by the end of 2024 or already in 2025, RPG lovers like myself have enjoyed a good menu over the past decade, and 2023 was no exception. I know that when thinking of an RPG from last year, many of you will think of Baldur’s Gate 3, but there was another great RPG that stole my heart: Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, a project that I hardly expected anything from and that now has kept me hooked for hours with its DLC, almost a year after its release.
The trajectory of Owlcat Games and Larian Studios has been very similar. Although they don’t have as prolific a track record as the Belgians, the Cypriots ventured into fantasy and role-playing in 2018 with Pathfinder, a role-playing universe that competes in prominence with Dungeons & Dragons. This project helped them grow as a studio and as a team to be reckoned with, until in 2023 they adapted the Warhammer 40K universe, moving away from the epic of this world and focusing more on narrative and exploration than on action.
