Even though the project has been in the works since 2021, it wasn’t until now that we discovered why Robbie Williams‘ movie took so long to materialize. Following in the footsteps of other biopics like Elton John or Amy Winehouse, the idea also revolves around portraying the life of the pop star, but this time the protagonist will be a monkey in the purest style of The Planet of the Apes and not Robbie Williams himself. Yes, you read that right.
Scheduled for release on December 25th, the movie Better Man will track Robbie Williams’ career from his childhood to joining Take That and subsequent solo success. However, instead of approaching it from a conventional perspective, director Michael Gracey wanted to convey the wildness of the music industry and the spirit of the pop star from a different point of view.
Robbie Williams will be a monkey in his biopic
As reported by the singer alongside the director of The Greatest Showman in a talk about the movie, during their first interview Gracey asked Williams which animal he identified with the most, leading to the idea of turning him into a monkey to break away from the conventions of previous biopics. However, when it came to securing funding, no one understood the concept.
The director recalls that after explaining the idea to major production companies, their expressions changed completely and they ended the meeting abruptly, prompting the movie to seek alternative funding sources until they managed to solidify the concept with the help of Weta FX and their CGI work in films like Avatar or, drawing similarities, the reboot of The Planet of the Apes franchise that streamlined the process.
Although the budget seems to be around 100 million dollars, the response to the movie from those who have seen it has been very positive. A trend that, as indicated by comments on the teaser released to promote the film, seems likely to continue when it hits theaters.
