The mode that gave Destiny 2 more popularity than its latest and best expansion to date is returning imminently.

This week, Bungie will kick off a new episode of Destiny 2. It’s called “Resurgence” (Revenant in English) and has a heavy-metal theme with the veteran Fikrul as the main villain. On the gameplay side, one of its most interesting novelties is the return of the “Onslaught” mode that debuted last April as part of the Into the Light update and was extremely well received by the community back then.

Of course, the new mode won’t be an exact copy of the original: developers have implemented new maps into the formula, like Widow’s Court that you’ll probably recognize from the Crucible; as well as new difficulty options with their own nuances (e.g. gear level is enabled when playing on expert) and also debuting defensive units like burning turrets and stasis mines that generate crystals.

We will have two Into the Light-sized updates when Frontiers arrives

The latter fit very well with builds focused on the homonymous element, which is also one of the highlights of the new artifact. Overall, the general functioning of the match will remain the same: 50 enemy hordes of scalable difficulty with semi-random objectives and mechanics sprinkled in between, ranging from annihilating certain elites against the clock to surviving a wave of explosive enemies heading straight to blow up the structure we must defend.

The legacy of Into the Light

In the past, Bungie had already shown satisfaction with the numbers and opinions garnered by the Onslaught mode, so its return doesn’t catch us completely off guard; with many users also celebrating the idea on social media. That said, it is important to note that part of the reason it generated so much excitement in Into the Light is that the mode was closely linked to obtaining certain super popular weapons, and those same pieces are already in the private arsenals of most enthusiasts.

Destiny 2 gained a lot of popularity thanks to Into the Light, and somewhat less in the expansion The Final Shape.

Until we see how Onslaught fares this time, for now we will settle for knowing that Resurgence kicks off on Tuesday, October 8th with the game’s weekly reset. Destiny 2 is expected to receive one last episode this year before delving into its second major narrative arc with Frontiers and its non-linear biannual expansions. This change comes, in part, in response to the contrast between the activity levels of Into the Light and the decreasing interest of the big paid expansions: The Final Shape was one of the highest-rated contents of 2024 upon its release, but it didn’t generate as much activity as the free mode that preceded it.
