A few years ago, the DVD took over from VHS and confirmed that technology had been able to make a leap thanks to the ability to introduce more information in a smaller and lighter space. Following it, it seemed that Blu-Ray was next in line, as for many years it positioned itself as a new standard that was gaining ground on the already aging DVD. However, as time has passed and in light of the events that have unfolded, it is mandatory to ask oneself: what has happened to Blu-Ray?
In its early years of existence, many gamers and movie enthusiasts were happy with the arrival of this option, as it allowed to take the concept to the next level that the DVD had standardized. However, the rise of streaming platforms like Netflix or Prime Video caused interest in physical media to decline. This, coupled with the high costs associated with the development of Blu-Ray discs compared to DVDs, ultimately led both companies and users to not see it as a worthwhile investment. Therefore, unlike what happened with the transition from VHS to DVD, the same did not happen with Blu-Ray.
Gamers are the biggest supporters of this format
The trend towards digital content caused consumers to no longer feel the need to make use of physical discs. Thus, the additional features and extras offered by Blu-Ray discs were not a significant draw for consumers, as the trend had shifted and most prioritized the quick access offered by streaming platforms. However, there is one group that at this point seems to have become the resistance: gamers.
Thanks to the inclusion of Blu-Ray players in systems like PlayStation 3, this format became popular among gamers. Unfortunately, the adoption of the system outside the gaming ecosystem was limited, but the support from gamers has helped keep alive a format that never enjoyed the impact that previous standards like VHS or DVD did. Despite not achieving the projected universality in its beginnings, it can boast of having a large niche among collectors and movie enthusiasts. These, along with gamers, are the ones who have ended up valuing Blu-Ray the most.
