Data centers cause a terrible impact on the environment despite having the solution for energy waste

Published:

One of the main concerns of companies like Amazon, Google, or Microsoft is the energy expenditure involved in maintaining their data centers. Being a fundamental part of today’s technology, companies have no qualms about investing in these types of functionalities. However, several experts and multiple reports point in the same direction: data centers waste energy by keeping processors at maximum speed.

As indicated by the TechSpot portal in a recent publication, the energy consumption of data centers has become a major concern due to the increase in demand. Therefore, companies are looking to reduce both costs and energy usage. And, to do this, institutions like the Uptime Institute suggest that activating energy-saving functions on servers could significantly reduce consumption between 25% and 50%. Therefore, we are talking about a move that could have a tremendously positive impact on planet conservation.

Many energy-saving functions are disabled

Surprisingly, the original news points out that many energy-saving functions are disabled. For this reason, Uptime argues that modern processors often offer maximum performance above what is necessary, which is why more emphasis should be placed on energy management through software-based controls (with a 25-50% savings impact) and hardware (up to 10% savings impact). By doing so, this combined approach could offer an intermediate energy savings that would minimize latency impact.

However, for most cases, the main concern should be excessive energy consumption, as excessive performance is often unnecessary and has a high energy cost. Additionally, the impact on latency of energy management techniques could be less than feared. The reason? They were originally developed for mobile applications, a sector where energy efficiency is crucial. Therefore, Uptime believes that servers will achieve energy efficiency once lower performance states are limited, which would prevent unnecessary energy waste.
