There are so many titles that even the majority of players prefer video games of moderate length over games with many hours of content. In this sense, the creators of the new game Dying Light realized that the future of video games lies in creating shorter games. There are several reasons for this, but one of the most important reasons may be that more than half of buyers do not complete the game they paid for.
This universal rule applies to the vast majority of video games, but it seems that the authors of Dying Light: The Beast are committed to increasing this percentage. The publication Game Developer had the opportunity to speak with the head of the Dying Light franchise, Tymon Smektala, at Gamescom 2024 to offer some details about the studio’s goals with this release. One of them is to ensure that everyone who plays The Best completes the story from start to finish.
The goal is to have players finish Dying Light: The Beast
Although previous titles in the franchise exceed 30-40 hours if you complete the side content, Smektala says that only 50% of users completed the first Dying Light, while the second installment was completed by 40% of players. This statistic is quite high considering that the data is barely above 20%, but with Dying Light: The Beast everything is different because we are talking about a superior installment that aims to offer a better gaming experience by bringing back Kyle Crane, the protagonist of the first game.
“Imagine working on the grand finale of your game and only half of your players see it,” he says. For that same reason, Techland has hinted that Dying Light: The Beast will be released in less than three years. “We have to find the middle ground between it being too short -something that can be avoided- and it being so big that there’s no time to finish it. We want everyone who plays it to finish it, because it really answers many questions, and we truly believe in the narrative we have there.”
The fact that Techland decided to set aside the second expansion of Dying Light 2 and create a larger DLC that allowed them to release a standalone game, gave the team more freedom to implement new ideas. “When the decision was made, we were able to unleash all the ideas and take this project to the state we knew it could reach.” In fact, part of the producer’s job is to ensure that the game meets deadlines and reject some ideas for future projects.
