A company develops a 32-bit microprocessor known for its flexibility and extremely low production cost

Published:

The realm of gaming processors is dominated by the direction of Intel and AMD, the two giants of the industry. In recent years, they have both shared the crown of the sector, but the setbacks that the blue brand has faced in the most recent months have brought AMD closer than ever. However, away from the gaming field, the company Pragmatic Semiconductor has given the green light to a 32-bit microprocessor that is about to make history.

Is the iPhone 16 Pro the best phone on the market for gaming? Performance tests make it clear

As indicated by the portal TechSpot in a recent publication, the main virtue of the Flex-RV microprocessor is not its flexibility, which is already impressive, but its production cost: less than one euro. Furthermore, it uses the open architecture RISC-V, which allows it to avoid licensing costs in order to make the chip more accessible.

Innovative material and efficient performance

Pragmatic Semiconductor has chosen to use indium gallium zinc oxide (IGZO) instead of conventional silicon. Thanks to this, the transistors are directly printed on plastic substrates at low temperatures, eliminating the need for complex packaging. In addition, the Flex-RV can be wrapped around an object without losing its ability to execute code, demonstrating both its adaptability and durability. And, with only 12,600 logic gates, it reaches a maximum clock speed of 60 KHz, a modest performance that is compensated with a low-power machine learning accelerator.

Thus, it is perfect for disposable medical devices and other flexible electronic devices, as it consumes less than 6 mW. In tests, the processor maintained its accuracy even when bent to a 5 mm curvature radius, showing minimal performance loss. Thanks to it, they have managed to take the idea of a flexible integrated circuit to the next level, making it one of the most ambitious proposals in the technology sector.
