This generation of Xbox consoles does not seem to be the best for Microsoft, and that can be seen reflected in numerous aspects, such as the difference in sales compared to the PS5, the new strategy with their own games, and the recent layoffs at the company. Although Bethesda and Activision Blizzard have many interesting titles in the works, there are some studios that decide not to release games for Xbox consoles.
This has not pleased Microsoft, and the company wants to discover all the reasons why some studios do not release their titles on the Xbox Series X|S. As reported by The Verge, the Redmond-based company is seeking direct feedback from developers through the Xbox Research program on various aspects of the ecosystem they operate in. This is similar to the Xbox Insider, but this time it has been expanded to include members of development studios.
“We want to know the opinions of everyone working on games or assisting studios, because if we can make their lives easier, the quality of video games will improve,” explains Deborah Henderson, a doctor and lead Xbox user researcher. The program will also gather developers’ opinions on tools, performance adjustments, debugging utilities, and other technical aspects.
Microsoft wants to know why some developers do not release games on Xbox
However, what has surprised the most are the questions directed at studios that have not released games for Xbox: “If you are not on Xbox, we would love to know why. And, honestly, if you use products from the competition, you probably have a perspective from which we can learn,” they explain. While there may be more reasons behind not releasing games on Xbox, below are some that developers have publicly commented on.
While some titles like Silent Hill 2 Remake do not come to Xbox Series X|S due to agreements with PlayStation or other companies, there are studios that may prioritize other platforms where more copies are sold. Others have lamented that Xbox has “the worst game publishing process,” which is closely related to what happened with Enotria: The Last Song.
However, titles like Black Myth Wukong will not come to Xbox until a later date, and its creators stated that this was due to “technical limitations,” while Microsoft hinted that it was due to “agreements with platform holders.” Whatever the reason, the fact that Xbox Series S is less powerful than its big sister has caused a stir on social media, which may have affected more than one development studio in important aspects such as split-screen mode, like the delay Baldur’s Gate 3 experienced over a year ago.
