Artificial intelligence is the technological sector that has garnered the most attention in recent months. With the rise of ChatGPT, the conversational bot from OpenAI, many companies have shown interest in this field, which is why giants like Google have integrated the benefits of this technology into their latest updates. However, there is a concern that worries many people: the possible impact that artificial intelligence may have on their job.
As indicated by the portal Ars Technica in a recent publication, one of the main concerns of companies and users has become a reality, as AI bots can now defeat 100% of traffic image CAPTCHAs. Thanks to advanced image recognition models, bots achieve human-level performance, a situation that leads them to solve all reCAPTCHA v2 puzzles.
Success rate ranges from 69% to 100%
According to the original news, the YOLO model was used to defeat CAPTCHAs, as this model is known for its ability to detect objects in real time and can be used on devices with low processing power. Researchers trained the YOLO model with 14,000 traffic images to identify objects in CAPTCHAs, achieving a success rate ranging from 69% (motorcycles) to 100% (hydrants). In fact, researchers also took other measures to trick the system, hence taking advantage of a VPN and a mouse movement model to simulate human activity.
Even so, the bot was able to solve CAPTCHAs more efficiently than humans in some cases, surpassing the tests with fewer individual challenges. This suggests that we are facing an era beyond CAPTCHAs, as the authors of the study affirm that the ability of AIs to overcome these challenges consistently increases. Thus, the issue between bots and CAPTCHAs continues to grow: in 2008, bots were able to beat audio tests, and in 2017, a similar situation occurred with text-based tests. Therefore, human identification is shifting towards more subtle methods, but it is increasingly difficult to guarantee that a person is using the browser.
