Many of you may not be familiar with Mörk Borg; I certainly wasn’t until this morning. It is a tabletop game, published in 2020, based on a world of dark fantasy and inspired by death metal. It is a curious combination by the Swedes Pelle Nilsson and Johan Nohr, considered the game with the best design and writing of the year, and it will make the leap to the world of video games. Under the name of Heresy Supreme, Mörk Borg will expand with a semiprocedural action RPG with insane artwork.
This project, which combines the atmosphere of Scandinavian metal with the gameplay of titles like Dark Souls, albeit in a 2D aspect, was announced last week through a trailer on YouTube that left us wanting more, showcasing a tremendously imaginative project. It is worth noting that the developers, Morbidware, plan to fund the game through a Kickstarter campaign before its release on Steam in 2025. However, and although the funding campaign has not been activated yet, there are already 2,042 followers, so it is expected to be a great success.
What is Heresy Supreme?
Since its release, Mörk Borg has gained popularity in the tabletop role-playing games scene thanks to its modern aesthetic and simple rules, making it as attractive as it is functional. The game books are both illustrative and functional, ideal for collectors. This visual and creative essence appears to have been transferred to Heresy Supreme, which features defined characters as “filthy souls” that experience both physical and metaphysical decay as they progress.
As we can read, in terms of gameplay, Heresy Supreme promises to offer a “dark fantasy and semiprocedural side-scrolling world,” where players take on the roles of doomed travelers trying to prevent or contribute to the impending apocalypse. In this context, drawing influence from FromSoftware’s soulslike games, Heresy Supreme stands out for a methodical combat system that emphasizes dodging, thrusts, blocks, and powerful magical attacks that require time to charge, promising a challenging and strategic experience.
One of the most intriguing features of Heresy Supreme is its focus on character improvement. As players level up certain skills, they may see a deterioration in others. The developers warn that “the more you level up, the more likely you are to lose something in the process,” adding a layer of strategy and risk to the game’s progression.
The skill system is also key in this RPG experience, where each character has four attributes: strength, agility, presence, and toughness. These skills affect the game mechanics and interactions with the environment and enemies. Some encounters will require rolls of a modified d20 based on the corresponding skill, implying that luck plays a crucial role in survival.
