If you were to ask a Monster Hunter saga fan when the saga changed forever, they would most likely mention one of the two latest games. Logic would invite us to agree with them, since more than 60% of all franchise sales have occurred since Monster Hunter: World arrived in January 2018. Ryozo Tsujimoto, producer of the saga for 20 years, disagrees with this view. For him, what changed everything wasn’t even one of his games. Instead, he believes that this is the consequence of something that started brewing because of PSP.
The great triumph of Monster Hunter on PSP
In an interview published in Sankei Shimbun, one of Japan’s most important media outlets, Tsujimoto explains that the early Monster Hunter games suffered because of the technology of the time. The thing is, his idea had always been for the saga to be an experience we could enjoy together, but setting up online play on the PlayStation 2 was very complex for users. The franchise’s producer explains that many players fell in love with the saga due to its innovative concept, but that also closed many other doors.
Tsujimoto has insisted many times on his idea that the Monster Hunter saga is only understood from the perspective of social gaming, and that’s why PSP plays such an important role for him. Sony’s machine had the honor of being the first console to offer both wifi internet connection and a game from the franchise at the same time. “It allowed people to experience the joy of playing together at a time when they were less willing to go to a friend’s house to spend the night gaming,” said the producer.
The PSP installments proved that the Monster Hunter idea was viable and led Capcom to keep working. So here we are almost two decades later. Monster Hunter: Wilds is the most anticipated on Steam above giants like Deadlock, Hollow Knight: Silksong, or STALKER 2. With a social game that has become increasingly relevant, things would have to go very wrong for the saga not to show the brilliance of its future when the new installment arrives on February 28, 2025.
