In late May, we learned that Huawei had in mind the launch of its most ambitious maneuver to date: the total deployment of HarmonyOS, its operating system. With it, the company’s intention is to compete with giants like Samsung and Apple, as it sets itself apart from Android while giving the green light to an OS that has nothing to envy in iOS. And, as the Chinese firm confirmed a few months ago, this move will also affect its line of computers.
As indicated by the portal TechSpot in a recent publication, Huawei will replace Windows with HarmonyOS in its upcoming PCs. By doing so, it opens the door to a significant change in the operating system of its devices, as the tool officially launched in 2019 will make its way to computers after being present on TVs and mobiles. In fact, the original news points out that the company’s future computers will use HarmonyOS Next, a new version of the operating system that will be ready by the end of 2024.
From Android and Linux to HarmonyOS
Initially, HarmonyOS was a system based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and the Linux kernel, but the Next version will not include AOSP code and will not be compatible with Android. In this way, it will have its own native app format developed in JavaScript, TypeScript, and an optimized compiler. Furthermore, to grasp the magnitude of this move, one only needs to look at Huawei’s presence in the PC market in China: 10% of the annual 40 million sales belong to the brand.
Lenovo, the leader in the Asian market, has no intention of replacing Windows with HarmonyOS, but this situation could change if the technological sanctions that the United States imposes on China persist. However, the Next version is not yet ready to replace Windows or Android in all areas, as it lacks support for game developers and other aspects that need to be addressed. Nevertheless, it has more than 10,000 applications and services already available, which is why it has a strong foundation to build upon.
